ARTIST STATEMENT:

My name is Kendra Chiagoro-Noel and I am an artist based in London. I perform and release music under the name NWAKKE.

My work sits within the mediums of sound, writing, video and movement. I’m interested in creating live performances and recorded compositions that incorporate elements of theatre, emotional honesty, deep listening and choreography.

I think about this as creating/discovering space - for imagination, meditation, space for myself, space for freedom, and as a means to explore what it means to be here on earth, together.

I like to create sonic landscapes that express a journey or story, often in non-linear collages. In live improvisational settings, I use sound for presence and connectedness, and as a communication device.

I do this through instrument playing (saxophone, piano, drums, steel pan), singing and DJing, as well as through computer instruments, effects and pedals.

My movement practice evolves from a sense of reclamation, liberation and healing.

It currently involves a renegotiation and independent learning of ballet, research & training in African, Caribbean and Diaspora styles, Hip Hop and contemporary dance, arising from an enquiry into chronic pain and black dance spiritualities.

My intention is to balance healthcare, history, and training to build a movement vocabulary and consequent choreography/dance work that represents me, my communities and my life experience.
